Ajwa dates are known as one of the holiest date varieties and are instantly recognizable by their dark, prune-like skin and fine natural wrinkles. Ajwa is an ancient variety, with a history dating back to at least 5000 BC, and is most traditionally grown around the Saudi Arabian city of Madinah. The texture is soft yet slightly dry, with a gentle sweetness. Ajwa is often described as an earthy date, with subtle flavor notes of honey, cinnamon, and caramel.

Well-suited for those who find most dates too sweet, Ajwa is also a traditional choice during Ramadan. It is typically enjoyed on its own, when breaking a fast, or alongside a warm mug of coffee or tea as part of a simple, everyday routine.

Ajwa dates hold a special place in Islamic tradition. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is quoted to have said:

“Whoever eats seven Ajwa dates in the morning, neither poison nor magic will harm him that day.”

Because of this, Ajwa dates are often associated with daily practice, reflection, and a long-standing tradition rooted in Medinah.

A date valued for its history as much as for its taste.

A pioneer of organic date farming

Directly Sourced from the Farm

Jomara is a pioneer of organic farming in Saudi Arabia. They have a long history of certified EU-organic cultivation. From the palm groves to your table, we source our dates directly from the farm and the people who tend the palms, keeping the process direct and transparent.

Built on generations of date farming, Jomara grows its dates using only sustainable and organic farming practices that focus on soil health, water conservation, biodiversity, and long-term care of the date palms. The palm groves are managed fully without pesticides, pollinated by hand, and irrigated using traditional systems that respect the surrounding land.

Intentional farming at every step

How the Dates Are Grown and Harvested

Every year, the farmers at Jomara climb the date palms and carefully prune each date bundle by hand to ensure that every date has the optimal amount of sunlight, air circulation and space to develop properly. All organic waste, including the thinned sections, are reused as nutrient-rich compost, minimizing waste and keeping the soil fertile. When harvest season comes around, every date is harvested by hand and individually evaluated to ensure optimal quality and ripeness. The dates that don’t meet quality standards are never wasted, they either go back to the soil, or are used to make date paste/syrup. Jomara’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in their closed-loop farming, where nothing is wasted and everything supports the life of the grove.

Organic Farming, Clear Labeling

Organic Certification and Transparency

Jomara’s palm groves are fully EU-organic certified, as they grow exclusively under traditional and organic principles. Due to Swiss import regulations, we had to remove the organic label from the packaging as we don’t have the proper documents to import products as “organic” yet. The dates themselves are the same ones as Jomara’s dates that do have an organic label, the only difference being the packaging.

Jomara’s dates are packed in resealable ECOPURE paper pouches which are biodegradable, recyclable, and designed to reduce unnecessary plastic while keeping the dates fresh and protected for everyday use.
