How to choose the right date for you

Dates range from mild to intensely sweet and from soft and sticky to firm and chewy. Softer varieties are ideal for eating on their own, filling or blending, while firmer dates offer more bite and pair especially well with coffee, nuts or cheese. As a natural fruit, their colour, size, sweetness and softness can vary slightly from one harvest to the next.

Pressed or dried dates?

Pressed dates are gently pressed together after ripening, creating a compact, soft and naturally syrupy texture. The dates remain whole, no heat is used during pressing and no external ingredients are added; just dates. Dried dates keep their individual shape and generally offer a more distinct skin and bite. Neither is better than the other: the choice comes down to the sweetness, texture and eating experience you prefer. Both are traditional ways to enjoy dates.

How should dates be stored?

Pressed dates are best transferred to an airtight glass container after opening. Gently separate them before storing so they are easy to take out one at a time. They do not need to be refrigerated.

Dried dates are best kept in the refrigerator or freezer. If frozen, allow them to thaw before eating so their texture and flavour can return.

faq

Do your dates contain added sugar?

No. Their sweetness comes naturally from the fruit. We do not add any sugars, glucose syrups, oils, preservatives, flavourings or other additives. Unless otherwise specified, the only ingredient in our dates is dates.

Are the dates pitted?

No. Our dates are sold whole with their pits unless stated otherwise. Simply open the date and remove the pit before eating or using it in a recipe.

Where do your dates come from?

Our dates come from our partner farm in Saudi Arabia, where they are grown and harvested by hand. Maan, the co-founder of dattelmond, visits the farm whenever he visits his family in Saudi Arabia. It keeps us close to the people who grow our dates and lets us see for ourselves what’s happening on the farm.

Why do dates sometimes look or feel different?

Dates are a natural agricultural product, so colour, size, sweetness and softness can vary between harvests and even from one date to another. Temperature can also affect their texture. These natural differences are completely normal.

What pairs well with dates?

Dates pair especially well with coffee or tea, nuts, cheese and dark chocolate. Their natural sweetness also works beautifully in yoghurt, porridge and baking. Softer dates are easy to fill or blend, while firmer varieties add more bite when served whole or chopped.
