About us
We are a small family-run business based in Thurgau, Switzerland, focused on sustainably-farmed dates and date products. Dattelmond is run by the two of us, Maan & Zoé. Everything we do starts with how food is grown, handled, and shared, and with relationships built directly with the people behind it. Our work is shaped simply by where we come from, how we eat, and our values.
How it Started
Years ago, when Maan lived in Saudi Arabia, and Zoé in Switzerland, every visit Maan made included a suitcase full of pressed dates, olive oil, and spices from his family’s farm in Al Jouf, Saudi Arabia. We would share them with friends & family here in Switzerland.
When Maan moved to Switzerland, closing our long-distance, the regular “supply” of dates directly from Saudi came to a halt, leaving both us and our friends & family missing something that had already quickly became a regular part of the way we all eat.
We thought that if we and our friends & family were missing the pressed dates so intensely, surely others would too after trying them. What initially began as a bit of a joke, quickly became serious to fill the gap of quality dates in Switzerland. The dates you find here at the supermarket tend to be improperly stored, carelessly mass-sourced from settler farms and often produced through monoculture farming with little-to-no care to the soil.
We decided that we want to be the change, the ones to responsibly source quality dates from trusted farms focused on regenerative farming, not profit farming. We started dattelmond with our signature pressed dates, slowly expanding to other carefully thought-out products, trying to do our part to participate in the slow food concept.
Maan
For me, dates are far more than just a new “trend”; I grew up around dates since I was a baby. Having a Saudi Arabian background, dates were the first thing we ate in the morning, we offered them to friends & family who visited us at home, took them on the road, we gifted them as presents, we often even had several cupboards (and our freezer) full of dates at a time. These were all normal parts of everyday life. My family comes from the northern region of Saudi Arabia and have been cultivating date palms (and olives) for countless generations. This goes significantly deeper than just a “trend” for me; it’s in my blood and has been for centuries.
Years before dattelmond was ever even a distant thought, I used to sell dates from my family’s date farm along the side of busy highways in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia as a street vendor. My uncle would help me transport large barrels of pressed dates, weighing nearly 200kg each, and my mom and I would portion it into 1, 5, and 10kg bags in our kitchen. I would park somewhere with the dates and stand outside my car with a sign promoting them. At the time, it felt completely normal. Looking back, it was already the informal beginning of dattelmond.
Zoé
Growing up in rural Switzerland surrounded by nature, we were always outside. I was introduced to the concept of permaculture from an early age, and at home we tried our best to turn that "concept" into reality on the land that we live(d) on. We wanted to not only “make use of the land” that we had, but turn it into a better place than it was when we moved to our property, doing what we can to nourish the soil under strictly organic principles. We nourish our garden and in return it nourishes us.
I believe that food is substantially deeper than something you eat to get full; it’s healing when consumed consciously. We’ve always reached for herbs and roots instead of over-the-counter medications. That mindset carries directly into how we operate dattelmond on a daily basis, and into our constant efforts to improve and deepen our commitment to sustainability.
Our Two Worlds
In a way, dattelmond grew out of the space where our two worlds meet: a cultural relationship with dates shaped over centuries and many generations, and a deep respect for the land and the people who grow our food. Even as a couple, we still learn a lot from each other, and with each other, every single day.
Dattelmond is run entirely by the two of us. There’s no big team or “internal departments.” We’re involved in every step, from working directly with our partner farms to packing orders, designing our packaging and website, and attending markets. In late 2025, we even began handling all label and sticker printing ourselves, choosing exclusively compostable BIOpaper.
Our Partner Farms
We work directly with a small number of partner farms, primarily in Saudi Arabia, chosen for the way they grow and handle their dates. These partnerships are built carefully and intentionally, with a focus on quality, clear origins, and commitment to sustainability of the land.
Maan maintains close contact with our partner farms. Visiting and staying connected allows us to better understand the growing conditions, harvesting methods, and people behind the palms. Every visit to his family in Saudi Arabia, is a visit to the farms as well.
We choose to work with farms that respect the land they depend on. Date palms are grown alongside other plants to support soil health and biodiversity. Water is used carefully through drip irrigation, and the growing dates are protected using fruit nets, rather than chemical treatments. All of our products are grown fully without the use of chemicals or pesticides. Real farming is far from easy, but it is simple, as nature initially intended.
Sourcing & Ethics
Transparency in sourcing is incredibly important to us, and we select our partners accordingly.
As a company focused on dates, a fruit grown in regions affected by ongoing conflict, we believe it’s important to be explicit: we choose not to source from occupied territories and stand for ethical, responsible trade that does not benefit from displacement or occupation. 🍉 We don’t offer any products from either Palestine nor “Israel”, but we promise to only offer products from farms with transparent and authentic origins, never from settlements on stolen land, and never under the false misleading pretense of “Jordan Valley”.
All of our products are single-sourced, meaning each of our products have one clear origin to one individual farm, and are never mixed with dates from a different farm. Our strict single-source approach allows for clear traceability, quality control and consistency. This allows us to stay close to our sources and make thoughtful decisions at every step.
Our Products
Our assortment is growing slowly and thoughtfully. We are not trying to offer everything, just for the sake of offering everything. Every product we carry is consciously chosen and has a clear reason to be here. We only offer foods we consume ourselves and can fully stand behind. If we wouldn’t eat something ourselves, it doesn’t belong in our shop.
That same standard applies to ingredients. We are a seed-oil-free brand and avoid unnecessary additives or complicated formulations. We focus exclusively on whole foods with simple, transparent ingredients.
Simple food matters, because we believe what you eat should nourish and delight.
Our Core Values
Food with context
We care where food comes from, how it’s grown, and how it fits into daily life. Food shouldn't be "nameless, faceless"; it should be rooted in real places, cultivated by real people with care to the land and be easy to return to.
Respect & care for land and people
We work with farms that protect soil health, practice biodiversity, use water carefully, and treat people fairly. Long-term thinking matters more than short-term yield.
Clear origins
Every product we offer comes from one known farm with a traceable origin. We don’t blend, obscure, or generalise sources. Knowing exactly where our food comes from matters to us.
Slow food
We believe good food takes time. We choose traditional methods, seasonal rhythms, and careful handling over speed and scale. That’s why our assortment grows slowly, and why we stay close to how our food is grown and processed.
Food as nourishment
We believe food nourishes and supports the body over time; that you are what you eat. Food should not be reduced to calorie-counting and trends. We believe food is the original medicine.
